Hopi Creation Myth:
The Creator, Tiowa assigned Spider Grandmother as guardian for the earth. She spat into two handfuls of earth, and two men were created, who became here helpers – Poqanghoya and Palongwhoya. They sat in meditation to link minds. Poqanghoya was sent to the north pole, where he began to work his special magic, the power which gives structure and form to life. Palongwhoya then went to the south pole to say prayers. He heard a distant, slow rhythm –the heartbeat of Tiowa, which he began to beat out on his magical drum. When the two beats were in perfect harmony, a surge of life force came shooting down to earth. It struck the navel of the earth, the South Pole, and went down and down until it came to the crystal at the center of the earth. When the sound hit the crystal, the energy shot out in all directions, channeled by the structural magic of Poqanghoya. The reflected life-energy then popped from the earth’s crust, bringing the planet to life. At some places this energy is more abundant. These sacred places are called “spots of the fawn”.

i just returned from the hopi center of the universe for the water ceremony. quite powerful, especially the emergence of the kachinas... yow, how'd they do that!? i call it magic, they just call it life. ya know, if the shit hit the fan, they are quite prepared to live as a flourishing community. they have cell phones and t.v's (sattelite even) but thats in the outer village homes (there are 13 villages or clans) but at the center of it all is the main plaza, where the ladders and windows reside, and mud homes (now concreted some, but still very mundane). i spent time in some of these homes. most of them have one or two cots or beds, and wood pot belly stove and a watering well outreach. but truly, it was one of the best meals i ever had, the corn was divine, the beef stew amazing, the watermelon, very sweet. it's really like going out of time. i hope to go to the next one, and the one after that... my daughter met an great little friend. his name is yukyuk, which makes every one laugh. but his name is sacred and means the one who came during the hard pour. he's 4 and silly. most of the little boys out there are named junior otherwise, unless they we're born during ceremony. i love the hopi.
